World AIDS Day ('WAD')
As a major condom manufacturer and distributor, we believe we have an obligation to contribute to the global fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS which we do through the Durex Network.
As part of this, we ensure that we raise awareness of the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS with all our employees by providing them with packs of information to mark World AIDS Day on 1st December each year. This pack includes, posters, leaflets, factsheets and red ribbons for our employees to wear to demonstrate support for this important event.
In addition, SSL participated in activities to mark the day on both national and global scales. Here are a few highlights:
SSL's Global WAD Activities
To mark World AIDS Day 2007, Durex joined forces with Levi’s, the famous clothing brand, to raise awareness of the safer sex message.
More than 110,000 free condoms were distributed in 346 Levi’s stores in 19 countries across Europe, presented in single wallets specially designed for the occasion and showcasing a bold red and blue heart-shaped graphic.
The Durex/Levi’s condoms were distributed in the following countries from early November 2007: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, the UK and Ukraine.
Czech Republic
Durex supported World AIDS Day in the Czech Republic where the focus was on a major event in Wenceslas Square in the centre of Prague, organised by the National Programme Against AIDS, together with the Czech Family Planning Association.
The event included HIV/AIDS testing and handouts of various educational materials and information. Condom samples were also distributed.
Poland
MEDYK, a club for medical university students held a special World AIDS Day event to mark the day, consisting of a contest on knowledge of AIDS, with gifts sponsored by Durex, and sampling of Durex Extra Safe condoms.
Indonesia
Durex, together with other brands joined in on an AIDS walk, from Indonesia’s national monument, to a well known Indonesian hotel to give away product samples, Durex T-shirts and information materials to mark World AIDS Day on 1st December. At midday, 1000 dried condoms, filled with helium gas were released. Approximately 10 000 people attended this event, which was covered by various local print and electronic media.
